The Pursuit of Mastery

A few days ago I was listening to a recording of Jack Canfield in which he said that “the purpose of achieving goals is to achieve mastery“.

This got me thinking and made me realize that when you focus on “doing your job” or “getting the things done“, well … that is what you will get. Then, well, you can be satisfied with a “job well done“. Additionally the results that you will accomplish will be in direct relation with how well you “did your job” or how well you “got the stuff done“. Nothing wrong with that.

However, I have realized that if you focus on achieving mastery, your entire behavior changes dramatically. All of the sudden you get that extra push of motivation and that extra focus that gets you growing. And believe me, when you look at what you have done, the level of satisfaction is way higher.

I have also realized that back in the days when I was a flying trapeze artist, I was very focused on achieving mastery, although I was not aware of it!. Training every day, learning new tricks, working on technique, etc … the pursuit of mastery was part of my everyday live.

After ending my “circus adventure” and getting back to the “real world“, I have focused for long time on effectiveness and achieving my goals. However, I have stopped pursuing mastery and as a result, well, let’s say I have succeeded at accomplishing a “job well done“.

Time to make a change. Time to implement everyday what Anthony Robbins calls CANI: Constant and Never-Ending Improvement. That is how you accomplish mastery.

So, how does mastery look like? well, here I share with you a couple of examples of people that have accomplished mastery and who represent a great source of inspiration, regardless of what you do.

Cirque du Soleil

An incredible connection of music, dance, acrobatics and storytelling.

Roger Federer

Without a doubt one of the best tennis players in history. In this video … well, just check it out.

A gifted songwriter, who does not write any songs. He creates all his songs in his head and when the right melody appears he just puts everything together and creates incredible songs. Apart from his success in the music industry he has built a multimillion dollar empire with businesses in the fashion, entertainment and sports industries. In this video you see him creating a song (Warning: explicit language)

The pursuit of mastery is a long way road. You will not accomplish it quickly and it requires discipline and hard work. However this is a journey worth taking.
